We have all been there before - we want to take on a new hobby or challenge but are not sure where to begin. When it comes to running - is there a set plan to achieving success or avoiding "failure" for new runners?

We surveyed our clients, friends, and the running community. Below are some of the responses we got back:

  1. Patience - Rome wasn't built in a day, neither will your skill in this new hobby. Progress takes time and it's those who are patient enough to continue working that will likely see success.
  2. Consistency - Motivation will only get you so far, but consistency is the key to success. The more consistent you are with your running - the more likely you are to succeed
  3. Goal Setting - Set realistic goals early on. Bitting off more than you can chew is likely to not deliver results - and even leave you unmotivated.
  4. Positive Attititude - Believing in oneself will do wonders for your success as a runner.
  5. Proper Training - Following a well thought out & structured plan with your goals in mind is key.
  6. Adaptability/Flexibility - Not physical flexibility (although that's helpful as well), rather schedule and environmental flexibility. Your schedule is tough enough to manage without added training - so make sure you're able to switch things up when needed.
  7. Proper Nutrition - A healthy and balanced diet is important even if you're not a runner - but the proper nutrition will help you that much more on this new journey.
  8. Rest & Recovery - Taking time away or reducing the intensity of your workout allows your body to properly recover, improve performance and prevent injury.
  9. Sleep - Getting enough sleep. Training on fumes only hurts you in the long-run
  10. Support - Surround yourself with a network that will support you during the good & bad times of this new fitness-journey. Family, friends, and a strong running community can help keep an individual accountable and motivated.
